"The goal of these two volumes of Methods in Enzymology, Vol. 650 and 651, is to provide detailed methods related to interactions of rare earths with biological systems, spanning the research directions mentioned above, from fundamental biology of methylotrophs to emerging, far-reaching applications of this exciting field. Broadly, the first volume is focused on understanding the lanthanide-dependent processes of methylotrophs—genetic methods, protein expression and purification, activity assays of alcohol dehydrogenases, and model chemistry. The second volume is focused on the biochemical and biophysical characterization of natural and non-natural lanthanide-binding biomolecules, as well as emerging ways in which rare earths are being applied to medical imaging, therapeutics, screening, and sensing."
